ESSENTIAL JOB DUTY:  Perform Labor and Operate Equipment for the Street Division of the City of Spencer.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Operates one or more types of heavy motor equipment; performs skilled labor tasks; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  The work in this class requires skill in using heavy motor equipment and constant attention to safety of operation in order to prevent accidents.  Standard procedures are followed and work is inspected periodically for safety and efficiency in operation.  The Street Maintenance position also performs skilled labor tasks such as finishing concrete and asphalt.  

Essential Duties

  • Operate a snowplow, frontend loader, spreader, roller, tractor, auger truck or comparable equipment as assigned;

  • Service and make minor repairs to equipment;

  • Charge out materials to jobs;

  • Cut brush and operate chain saw;

  • Paint street barricades;

  • Perform rough carpentry work;

  • Mix cement;

  • Finish cement with finishing machine or by trowel;

  • Lay brick for man holes and catch basins;

  • Build curbs with cement;

  • Build forms for cement;

  • Cut cast iron pipe and concrete tile;

  • Repair park equipment such as swings, slides, merrygoround and cabins;

  • Stripe and mark streets, parking lots and curbs;

  • Maintain street signs;

  • Make and repair barricades and signs;

  • Make stencils for use in street marking.

  • Other duties as assigned

Additional Information

Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, vision, manual dexterity and use of body extremities and personal mobility, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to promptly, accurately and safely perform the duties of this position;  ability to lift 75 pounds from floor level to a height of approximately 30 inches; ability to comply with DOT-mandated drug and alcohol testing requirements, including passing random and other required drug and alcohol tests; ability to pass employment physical including drug and alcohol testing.  Other physical activities include walking, reaching, grasping, pushing, pulling, repetitive motions, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.

Requirements
Skill in the operation of heavy equipment under all types of weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; good knowledge of, or ability to learn, traffic and safety rules and accident prevention practices;  dependability; ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with the public;  CDL Class B with Air Brakes License preferred, but will train the right candidate with manual transmission experience. Must have acceptable driving record. Must be able to lift sixty (60) pounds on a continuous basis and up to one hundred twenty (120) pounds or more periodically.
